Learn to Love Your Speedlight

Learn to Love Your Speedlight

26th January. 9.30am - 13.30pm. £175

Many photographers describe their style as 'natural light' due to a fear of using additional lighting. This is our most popular half day workshop with delegates leaving excited and confident to use their speedlights (on and off camera) with a new understanding of their vital role in your kitbag.

WHERE:

Holbrook House, Steeple Claydon, Bucks, MK18 2PG

WHO:

Kate Hopewell-Smith

COST:

£175 which includes refreshments.

WHAT YOU NEED TO  BRING:

Your camera, a lens and speed light. Notes will be provided.

Many wedding and portrait photographers label themselves as 'natural light' shooters and indeed that is how I positioned myself when I didn't understand the benefits of flash or how to shoot it so that you can't obviously see it in the finished images.  Being booked for my first truly 'winter wedding' forced me to gain knowledge in the use of on camera speed lights. From that point on I have never gone on a shoot without one - whether on a sunny summer or overcast winter's day - speed lights are truly 'essential kit'.  This is not a portfolio building course - instead it is all about knowledge building. You will leave the flash workshop with a new confidence in how and when to use your speed light on and off camera and an understanding of its vital role in your kitbag.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP CONTENT:

  • Principles of flash: an introduction to how modern speedlights work in conjunction with your DSLR.
  • Sync speed: learn to understand the effect that your shutter speed has on flash.
  • Shutter speed: learn how to not kill the beauty of ambient light when using flash.
  • Aperture: controlling the amount of flash in the scene.
  • Flash Exposure Compensation: learn how to control the subtlety of your flash exposure.
  • Colour Temperature: learn how to match your flash to the ambient light
  • On Camera Fill Flash: you will be trained in how to improve poor light (indoors and outdoors) and how to shoot individuals, couples and groups outdoors in full sun.
  • Off Camera Flash: you will be trained in how to light portraits, groups and the dancefloor using speedlights, triggers and modifiers.

ACCOMMODATION:

We can suggest options if you need to stay locally incl. our own B&B service. Email us at :training@bylumiere.co.uk

GROUP SIZE:

We restrict numbers to a maximum of 9 delegates - the course requires a minimum booking of 5 to go ahead.

Many photographers would like to get established in the lucrative wedding market but are daunted by both the shooting and business challenges that come with it. This intensive 2 day wedding training workshop will hugely improve both confidence and knowledge levels as well as provide you with some beautifully styled portfolio imagery.

Kate Hopewell-Smith & Brent Kirkman

COST:

£650 which includes lunch and refreshments on both days.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:

Your camera and ideally a telephoto and wide angle lens and a speedlight. Notes will be provided.

Over the last 5 years of training I have discovered that fear is the biggest thing holding photographers back.  “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” ~ Nelson Mandela

Knowledge - both technical and business leads to confidence and we know that many photographers would like to get established in the lucrative wedding market but are daunted by both the shooting and business challenges that come with it. This intensive 2 day workshop will hugely improve both confidence and knowledge levels as well as provide you with some beautifully styled portfolio imagery.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP CONTENT:

DAY 1:

Following introductions we will begin by laying out our fears and establishing what you need to get out of the workshop. We will then discuss the importance of branding and market positioning when trying to get established as a wedding photographer. We will share the things that helped us to build a solid supplier network and word of mouth delivery system. We will also discuss the huge subject of pricing and sales and how to charge properly for your time. We will also discuss the importance of putting in place legal documentation and look at contracts and client communication. We will talk about the importance of marketing with particular focus on blogging, social media and SEO. In preparation for the shoot day we will explore posing - with particular reference to the bride and groom and group shots. We will give you an overview of how we work with light - from natural light on location to how to shoot subtle, beautiful fill flash and when more powerful off camera lighting is required.

DAY 2:

In the mornng whilst the 'bride' is having hair/make up done we will discuss the importance of glass - which lenses to use across the wedding day and why. We will also share our workflow, post production and proofing processes that we use across our UK and Destination wedding photography businesses. The shoot element of training will begin with some bride and groom prep and a variety of detail shots before we begin the location portfolio shoot against the stunning backdrop of the gardens and temples at Stowe. We will show you how we create ‘big’ environmental shots as well as how to get natural, genuine, expression and emotion from a couple. The session will include use of on and off camera flash and you will have an opportunity to direct and create your own images in a relaxed, friendly and encouraging teaching environment.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • How to get established in the Wedding industry
  • The importance of market position and branding
  • How to market yourself online and offline - building supplier networks
  • SEO & Blogging and how to manage social media platforms
